The Fairing & Painting Process

Fairing is the process whereby a less than smooth surface is primed, filled, sanded and then primed once again in preparation for painting. A professionally faired hull greatly enhances the quality of the paint finish to a superior mirror like finish.


1We firstly analyse a vessel’s exterior surface for imperfections by using a straight edged, elongated board to mark out the imperfections in the vessel’s surface.

2We then fill and fair the superstructure or vessel with a fairing compound. This is applied using hand trowels and aluminium fairing batons.

3Once the fairing compound has cured, it is sanded using longboards to achieve a smooth faired surface. This process may have to be repeated three to four times depending on the depth of the imperfections to the hull sides.

4Upon the faired surface being smooth and fair, a final optional application of sprayable fairing compound may be applied.

5Once the fairing compound has been applied and manually sanded, priming and painting of the faired hull or superstructure then completes the fairing process.

6This includes two to three coats of epoxy primer which is applied above the sprayable compound in preparation for the polyurethane topcoat system.
